Dental Implant Post-Operative Instructions

How Should I Care for My Dental Implant After Surgery?

Gentle, careful aftercare protects the surgical site and supports a healthy dental implant recovery. Some swelling, tenderness, and minor bleeding are expected in the early stages of healing.

Your surgical team will give you instructions for your specific procedure. If those personalized instructions differ from the general guidance below, follow the instructions from El Paso Oral Surgery.

Your First Day of Dental Implant Recovery

What Should I Do in the First 24 Hours After Surgery?

The first 24 hours give your surgical site time to begin healing. During the first day:

  • Do not vigorously rinse or spit unless instructed otherwise.
  • Avoid touching the implant or surgical area with your fingers or tongue.
  • Do not use a straw or create suction in your mouth.
  • Rest and limit physical activity.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Choose soft, easy-to-chew foods.
  • Take all prescribed or recommended medications exactly as directed by your surgical team.
  • Avoid smoking, vaping, and tobacco products, as they can interfere with healing.

A small amount of bleeding or blood-tinged saliva can be normal after oral surgery.

Managing Swelling and Discomfort After Dental Implant Surgery

What Should I Expect in the First Few Days?

Swelling and tenderness are common after dental implant placement. They may increase for the first few days before they begin to improve.

Use cold packs on the outside of your face as directed by your surgical team during early recovery. Always place a barrier between the cold pack and your skin.

Take pain medication only as your surgical team or the medication label directs. Do not exceed recommended doses. Do not combine medications unless you have been instructed to do so.

If discomfort becomes severe, suddenly worsens, or is not controlled by your prescribed recovery plan, contact our office.

Soft Foods and Hydration for Dental Implant Recovery

What Can I Eat After Dental Implant Surgery?

Start with soft foods and plenty of fluids, then return to your normal diet gradually as comfort and healing allow. Good nutrition and hydration are important during recovery.

Good options may include:

  • Yogurt
  • Applesauce
  • Eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smooth soups that are not excessively hot
  • Soft pasta
  • Cottage cheese
  • Smoothies eaten with a spoon rather than a straw

Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or sharp foods that could irritate the surgical area. Popcorn, nuts, seeds, and chips can get trapped around a healing surgical site. Avoid them until your surgical team says they are appropriate.

Try not to chew directly over the implant site during the early healing period.

Oral Hygiene After Dental Implant Surgery

How Do I Keep My Mouth Clean Without Disturbing the Implant?

Keep your mouth clean, but treat the surgical area gently.

Brush the rest of your teeth carefully and avoid direct trauma to the surgical site. When your surgical team says to begin, you may be advised to use gentle warm saltwater rinses or a prescribed mouth rinse.

Do not vigorously swish around the implant site. If you were given a prescription rinse, use it exactly as directed.

When Can I Return to Normal Activity After Dental Implant Surgery?

Plan to take it easy right after your procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that significantly raise your heart rate during early recovery.

Keep avoiding these activities for as long as your surgical team recommends. Return to normal activities gradually, based on how you feel and the instructions for your specific procedure.

Smoking, Vaping, and Dental Implant Healing

Why Should I Avoid Tobacco While My Implant Heals?

Smoking, vaping, nicotine, and tobacco use can interfere with normal healing. They are also associated with poorer outcomes after dental implant treatment.

Avoid these products during your recovery. Follow your surgical team’s recommendations on how long you should refrain from use.
